In the rush to write great dialogue, we often forget the magic that lingers in silence. The pauses. The glance that isn’t returned. The unfinished sentence. These quiet moments, nestled between words, are often where the soul of a story truly breathes.
When characters choose not to speak, they often reveal more than they would with a thousand words. A silence can carry regret, desire, defiance, even forgiveness. In life, too, we know the weight of a quiet room after an argument, the hush before someone says goodbye, or the stillness that settles when emotions are too deep for speech.
As a writer, listen closely to these silences. They are not empty. They hum with tension, tenderness, and truth. Let your characters pause. Let them hesitate. Allow readers to feel what they don’t say. Because often, silence isn’t absence—it’s presence in its most powerful form.
Let your stories breathe between the lines.
