She spoke of Valparaíso as a city that never pretends to be neat. Living there taught her that Chilean life accepts complexity without apology. Homes climbed hills unevenly, painted in colours that resisted uniformity. Nothing matched—and that was the point.
The port dictated rhythm. Mornings began with movement, not urgency. Elevators creaked upward carrying workers, students, stories. Street art wasn’t decoration; it was conversation, memory, protest, humour—often all at once.
Locals valued endurance. Earthquakes were accepted as part of life, not catastrophe alone. There was resilience in routine, pride in improvisation, and dignity in continuing without spectacle.
Visitors saw charm.
Those who lived there learned patience—and a deeper sense of balance.
