Long before air conditioning was invented, architects in Iran developed an elegant solution to the challenge of extreme heat.
Known as wind towers, or badgirs, these tall structures were designed to capture passing breezes and direct cool air into homes and public buildings.
Some of these towers rise above historic city skylines even today.
Their design reflects a deep understanding of local climate and natural airflow.
The towers work without electricity.
They rely entirely on engineering, geometry and the forces of nature.
For centuries, they helped make life more comfortable in regions where summer temperatures could be intense.
What makes the wind towers remarkable is their relevance to modern discussions about sustainability.
They demonstrate that traditional knowledge often contains solutions that remain valuable long after their creation.
The builders did not possess modern technology.
Yet they understood how to work with the environment rather than against it.
The wind towers of Iran remind us that innovation is not always new.
Sometimes the future can learn from the wisdom of the past.
