A small bookshop gained an unusual employee when a stray cat wandered through the door one rainy afternoon.
The owner offered food and shelter.
The cat stayed.
Days became weeks, and weeks became years.
Customers soon began asking about the cat before asking about books.
Some visitors arrived simply to see their feline friend resting among the shelves.
The cat seemed perfectly suited to its surroundings.
It greeted newcomers, occupied sunny corners and occasionally supervised inventory from a comfortable chair.
The bookshop became known throughout the neighborhood not only for its books but also for its resident companion.
Animals have a remarkable way of becoming part of a community.
They ask for little, yet often contribute greatly.
The cat never sold a single book.
Yet it helped create an atmosphere that encouraged people to return.
And perhaps that is a contribution worth celebrating.
