The Person Who Lets You Finish Speaking

There is a quiet kind of respect that rarely receives attention. It belongs to the person who lets you finish speaking.

Most conversations today seem to have a hidden competition in them. While one person talks, the other is already preparing a reply. Sometimes the reply is ready before the first sentence has ended. We interrupt to correct a detail, offer advice, tell a similar story, or prove that we have understood.

But being heard is not the same as being answered.

Occasionally, someone listens without reaching for the conversation. They do not rush to repair our sadness or turn our experience into a lesson. They allow a pause. They let us search for the right words, even when those words arrive slowly.

Such people may not always have the cleverest answers. They offer something more difficult: room.

I have noticed that we sometimes remember less of what people tell us than how we felt while telling it. A conversation can leave us feeling smaller, hurried and foolish. Another can leave us with the same problem, but a lighter heart.

The difference may be no more than a few uninterrupted minutes.

The next time someone speaks to you about something that matters, try not to prepare your answer too soon. You may discover that listening carefully is not an empty space between two opinions. It is a form of kindness in its own right.
