Trust is easy to speak about and difficult to rebuild. It grows quietly through consistency, through promises kept and through the confidence that another person will not use our vulnerability against us.
Yet life occasionally teaches us to become cautious. A friendship disappoints, a commitment is broken, or someone we relied upon chooses convenience over honesty. Gradually, we begin to protect ourselves by expecting less from everyone.
Perhaps caution is necessary, but permanent suspicion comes at a cost. It can prevent us from recognising the sincerity of people who enter our lives with no intention of repeating yesterday’s mistakes.
Trusting again does not mean forgetting what happened. It means refusing to allow one experience to determine every future relationship.
There is strength in remembering a disappointment without becoming bitter. There is wisdom in setting boundaries without closing every door.
After all, life continues to introduce us to people who deserve an opportunity to be known, not merely judged by the failures of others.
