Botswana – Where a River Disappears into the Desert

In north-western Botswana, the Okavango Delta creates one of Africa’s most extraordinary landscapes.
What makes it remarkable is something that sounds almost impossible: this great river system does not reach the sea.
Instead, the waters spread across the Kalahari sands, forming permanent wetlands and seasonally flooded plains. The annual flood arrives during Botswana’s dry season, transforming the landscape and sustaining an extraordinary variety of plant and animal life.
The Okavango is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised for its remarkable natural processes and biodiversity. It provides habitat for species including elephants, lions, cheetahs, African wild dogs and rhinoceroses.
Perhaps the most beautiful part is the rhythm of the place.
Water arrives when the surrounding land is at its driest, and life responds.
The Okavango reminds us that nature does not always follow the patterns we expect.
Sometimes, the most extraordinary places are created precisely because they do something differently.
