On the night of 14–15 August 1947, India stood at the threshold of independence.
In his historic “Tryst with Destiny” speech, Jawaharlal Nehru spoke of a moment when India would “awake to life and freedom.”
But independence was never simply the changing of a flag.
It was the beginning of a responsibility.
A nation that had spent generations seeking freedom now had to build a future—through education, institutions, scientific progress, social development and the difficult work of holding together an extraordinary diversity of people.
That journey is still continuing.
Every generation inherits the freedom won by those before it, but each generation must also decide what it will do with that freedom.
Perhaps that is the most meaningful way to remember Independence Day.
Not only by looking back at 1947, but by asking what kind of India we wish to leave behind.
