“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”
— Mahatma Gandhi

There is something about helping another person that changes us quietly.
It may be something very small.
Listening when somebody needs to talk.
Helping without making a show of it.
Remembering someone who might otherwise feel forgotten.
We sometimes imagine that a meaningful life must contain extraordinary achievements.
Perhaps not.
Perhaps much of a good life is made up of ordinary moments in which we make somebody else’s day a little easier.
Nobody may applaud.
Nobody may even remember.
But that does not make the act less valuable.
As the years pass, I think we begin to understand that the things which stay with us are often not the loudest moments.
They are the quiet ones.
A kind word.
A helping hand.
A person who was there when we needed them.
Maybe that is enough.
