“The future cannot be predicted, but futures can be invented.”
— Dennis Gabor, Inventing the Future (1963)
I like this thought because it leaves room for possibility.
We spend so much time wondering what will happen next.
Will things work out?
Will the plan succeed?
Will the road take us where we want to go?
Nobody really knows.
But perhaps we have more influence over tomorrow than we sometimes believe.
A small decision today can change a direction.
A new idea can open a door.
A conversation can repair something we thought was lost.
Even starting something late is still starting.
The future does not arrive fully formed.
We put something into it every day—our choices, our work, our kindness, our mistakes and our courage.
Perhaps we cannot know exactly what tomorrow will bring.
But we can certainly have a hand in what we bring to tomorrow.
