Every family has rules.
Some are written.
Most are not.
In our house, for example, there was one very important rule:
Nobody touches the last biscuit without asking.
One evening, the last biscuit disappeared.
Naturally, an investigation began.
Nobody knew anything.
The children denied it.
The adults looked offended.
Even the dog looked suspicious.
Then someone noticed a few crumbs on the dining table.
The entire family turned towards Dad.
He looked surprised.
“Why are you looking at me?”
Nobody answered.
He thought for a moment.
Then he smiled.
“All right. I ate it.”
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?”
He shrugged.
“I was afraid there would be a committee meeting.”
Everyone laughed.
The biscuit was gone.
The investigation was closed.
And, for the record, the house rule was quietly amended:
There is no such thing as the last biscuit.
There is only the biscuit nobody has found yet.
