There are places where
the beauty of a country seems to gather into one landscape. Maine’s Acadia National Park is one of them.
Set along the rugged Atlantic coast, Acadia brings together granite mountains, quiet forests, rocky shores, and islands shaped by the sea. It was established as the first national park east of the Mississippi River, and much of the land was assembled through the generosity of private citizens who wanted to preserve this extraordinary landscape for future generations.
At Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the North Atlantic seaboard, the view stretches across Frenchman Bay, islands, and the open Atlantic. The changing light can make the same landscape appear completely different from one visit to another.
What I find particularly moving about Acadia is the idea behind its existence: people saw something beautiful and believed it should not belong only to their generation.
They preserved it so that others could stand there years later and experience the same sense of wonder.
That is a beautiful part of America’s heritage.
