Oregon – The Deep Blue of Crater Lake

Deep in southern Oregon lies Crater Lake, the deepest lake in the United States. It occupies the caldera of Mount Mazama, a volcano that collapsed after a massive eruption thousands of years ago.
What makes the lake especially striking is its intense blue colour. Fed almost entirely by snow and rain, with no major river flowing into it, the water is remarkably clear.
The surrounding Crater Lake National Park, established in 1902, protects forests, volcanic landscapes, and the lake itself.
Standing above its steep, dark cliffs, the lake appears almost unreal—quiet, intensely blue, and surrounded by mountains.
For me, Crater Lake represents something particularly beautiful about America’s natural heritage: a landscape created by tremendous geological forces, preserved through generations, and still capable of making a visitor simply stop and look.
Some landscapes tell us how powerful nature can be.
Others remind us how fortunate we are to have protected them.
