When people think of Hawaiʻi, beaches and blue Pacific waters often come first to mind.
But on the island of Kauaʻi, there is another Hawaiʻi—one of deep valleys, red earth, forests and mountains.
Waimea Canyon State Park reveals an extraordinary landscape carved into the island. From its viewpoints, the canyon stretches across a vast rugged interior, its walls displaying shades of red, brown and green. Beyond it lies Kōkeʻe State Park, where the landscape rises into cool mountain forests and dramatic lookouts.
What makes this part of Hawaiʻi special is the contrast. The same island that offers tropical beaches also holds a landscape that feels almost alpine in character.
The beauty is not loud.
It simply unfolds as the road climbs higher and the Pacific disappears behind the mountains.
Hawaiʻi has many famous postcards.
But perhaps its greatest treasures are the places where nature quietly reminds us how wonderfully diverse America can be.
