Deep in Bulgaria’s Rila Mountains stands Rila Monastery, one of the country’s most remarkable cultural treasures.
Founded in the 10th century by St John of Rila, the monastery gradually developed from his hermit’s dwelling and tomb into a major spiritual and cultural centre. Over the centuries, it became an important influence on the religious life, art and culture of medieval Bulgaria.
The monastery was destroyed by fire in the early 19th century and rebuilt between 1834 and 1862. Its architecture, frescoes and craftsmanship are now regarded as outstanding examples of the Bulgarian Renaissance.
What makes Rila particularly fascinating is that it is not simply an old building preserved in isolation. For more than a thousand years, it has remained connected with the spiritual and cultural history of Bulgaria.
Surrounded by forests and mountains, the monastery seems to belong naturally to its landscape.
It is a reminder that heritage survives not merely in stones and walls, but in the stories and traditions carried through generations.
